The St Vincent St Mary Fighting Irish went 2-0 this weekend defeating Chaminade Ca & Chaminade MO in two tightly contested matchups in their host tournament the 1st annual Marianist Classic at the Lebron James Arena. The Irish have been on somewhat of a roll after winning consecutive back to back state championships the last 2 years, have now beefed up their schedule by moving up to Division 1 & putting more nationally ranked teams on the schedule. It has worked to the Irish advantage so far as they have racked up 3 out of 4 wins against such teams so far this season. They only lost a beat down by Cincinnati Moeller. They also played and lost to a very good Lamelo Ball-led Spire institute which is considered a prep school and not a traditional high school. Aside from these two blemishes, the Irish have been near flawless. Early in the season they went to Chicago and beat a Simeon team who hadn’t lost in the Classic in the tournament’s 7-year existence. then this weekend in back to back nights beat two great teams that surely did not just hand the games over to the Irish. In fact, the St V had to fight to get back in both of the games after getting behind. We asked Coach Dru about the team’s progress, and he related that he couldn’t be more pleased with the team and the way they’re playing right now. “There was a time when I didn’t know If I was going to blow this team up…” When asked about being in the conversation when it comes to national rankings, Joyce seemed largely unmoved by the subject “That’s for someone else, and if they think that highly of us then I’d be happy to accept it but right now I just want my guys to understand that I appreciate the effort that they put forth these last 2 nights…” Rather or not this team should be ranked nationally or not is up for debate, but the fact that this Irish team is special isn’t. Stay tuned.
